Humans are complex. We are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings. Although most people are well-acquainted with the first three parts, the last one doesn’t always feel so apparent. However, at some point, everyone goes through a spiritual awakening. When we acknowledge and process these spiritual awakening experiences for what they are, they can lead to a whole new way of understanding ourselves, other people, and the Universe.

The indicators that you might be going through a spiritual awakening can vary. Still, there are some occurrences that, barring any other known causes, usually point in that direction. This post and the next detail ten common signs of spiritual awakening that everyone should know about. We’ve also included some great tips for what to do when you notice each symptom. Being able to identify and deal with them right away could change your life forever!

10 Signs That You Might Be Experiencing a Spiritual Awakening (1-5)

1. Mental Disorientation or Brain Fog

Changes in brain functioning are some of the most common signs of spiritual awakening. This is especially true when it comes to your more logical thinking functions. The left brain, which is known to be responsible for your linear mental capacities, can experience inhibited ability. This can result in a feeling of fogginess, forgetfulness, and at times confusion.

Activities that used to be simple may feel much more difficult. You may have trouble remembering things associated with everyday tasks. Things that used to make perfect sense may all of a sudden lose their meaning. The part of your brain that helps you in this plane undergoes a “system error” as you experience a spiritual awakening.

How to deal: Be gentle with yourself. Avoid the impulse to overload on stimulants (caffeine, sugar, etc.) to compensate for the changes in logical functioning you’re experiencing. Also, try engaging the other half of your brain more than usual. Although left brain functions may get temporarily harder, your right brain might experience a burst of new energy. This can open you up creatively and emotionally. It may also give you new insight into philosophical or esoteric concepts, and help you connect better with loved ones!

2. Hypersensitivity

Many times, people who suddenly have sharpened senses – hearing, touch, taste, smell, and sight – are undergoing a
spiritual awakening. This may extend beyond the physical senses. You could become more intuitive, empathic, or psychically aware as well. (These are all things associated with what we know as the “sixth sense.”) Also, you could become more aware of certain frequencies or vibrations. Television, radio, and wireless waves may start to affect you differently, usually in an adverse way. Or, you could find yourself drawn to certain sounds, places, people, objects, and foods.

How to deal: Honor your senses. When you are going through the first stages of a spiritual awakening, they are your body’s way of helping you adjust. When your senses pull you toward something new, don’t hesitate to give it a try. Likewise, when things you normally do become a turn-off, pay attention. It might be time for a detox.

3. Mood Swings or Unusually Intense Emotions

spiritual awakening mood swingsThe sudden experience of extreme emotions can be another sign of spiritual awakening. One moment, you may feel perfectly happy, the next, you break down in tears. Things that never would have phased you before could start to make you very upset. You might experience these vacillations in mood a few times a week or several times a day.

How to deal: Whatever you do, don’t suppress what you are feeling. Find ways to express your emotions as they arise. Journaling or talking out your feelings with a trusted friend are both productive ways to process. You may even begin to notice patterns that help you understand your spiritual awakening process.

4. Changes in Sleep

Changes in your sleep pattern are another way that your body is affected by a spiritual awakening. The exact type of change differs depending on the person. Some people find themselves buzzing with energy and unable to fall asleep. Others need more sleep than usual as their bodies acclimate to the energetic change. Another group tends to wake up in the very early morning, often at the same time, without explanation.

How to deal: In the event that you’re feeling lethargic and tired, make more room in your schedule. Release habitual activities that no longer serve you and fill that time with quality rest. If you’re restless, try meditation. It could be that there is a particular message that you need to receive. Quieting the mind can help with this.

5. Sudden Anxiety

Sometimes, part of us recognizes that we are undergoing a huge transition and becomes overwhelmed. Being afraid of change during a spiritual awakening can lead to anxiety. Sometimes it’s a subtle, lasting feeling. It can also come in the form of panic attacks, complete with heavy breathing, elevated heart rate, sweating, etc. No matter how anxiety shows up, the root is always fear.

How to deal: Get connected. No matter what you choose to call your Higher Power, connecting with it is how you overcome fear. Sometimes, there is a particular life lesson that you need to learn in order to do this effectively. Either way, once you are able to make that connection, anxiety over your spiritual process usually fades.
